Front Row

A fan’s 20 years with Pat Metheny

2005–2026. Opening nights, marquees, hand claps in 22/8 and one very loud “YEAH!” Told from the seats closest to the stage, with photos from Sean Fenlon’s own archive.

Prelude

1986–1990 Prelude

Prelude: First Circle

Towson University, Maryland

Sean first heard Pat Metheny through the 1984 album First Circle while he was studying composition with Hank Levy at Towson University, between 1986 and 1990. Later, while researching his doctoral dissertation on Don Ellis at the Peabody Institute, he interviewed Pat by phone about Ellis’s influence. “The interview lasted hours,” he wrote.

“The epic ‘First Circle’ … begins with hand claps in 22/8. This is the song that brought me into the Metheny circle back in the late 80’s.”

The Way Up, opening night

American Music Theatre, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

The Way Up tour opened quietly. The Lancaster date never appeared on the Pat Metheny Group website; Sean learned about it from a late email to the PMG Listener Network, about three weeks before the show.

“I had the great pleasure to attend a concert presented by the Pat Metheny Group on Sunday, February 13, 2005 at The American Music Theater in Lancaster, PA. The concert was the first date of a tour to promote the group’s new recording, The Way Up.”

That year Sean was also part of the PMG Street Team for The Way Up.

Unity Group at The Warfield

The Warfield, San Francisco

“I enjoyed front row seats with my wife for this fantastic show — I was very lucky to catch this show in my travels en route from LA to Napa.”

Pat opened alone on the 42-string Pikasso guitar, then the Unity Band joined him for music from the Unity Band album. Giulio Carmassi came on for the Kin (←→) material.

Originals requested from Sean

  • Full-resolution originals of the three Warfield photos already on the site (selfie under the marquee, the marquee and the theatre); the live versions are only 320 × 240 pixels

Strathmore and fifteen seconds of fame

The Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda, Maryland

Three weeks to the day after San Francisco, Sean was back in the front row for the Kin (←→) tour, this time with six seats.

“When I joined the band hand-claps during this passage, I immediately drew the attention of Maestro Metheny himself who looked at me and shouted in my direction ‘YEAH!’ … For those 15-seconds, my heart raced — I was part of the Pat Metheny Unity Group.”

Originals requested from Sean

  • Full-resolution originals of the three Strathmore photos (front-row view, stage set-up and hall panorama); the live versions are 640 pixels wide

Sean ended his Strathmore review with a wish:

“Hopefully, one day I will find a way to shake Pat Metheny’s hand again and thank him for his unique inspiration.”

His photo archive holds a set of backstage photos dated August 6, 2014.

Sean saw the Unity Group twice in three weeks that spring, from the front row both times. A photo of his 2014 ticket stubs is in the archive.

October 20, 2014 (to confirm) Unity Group

Unity Group, autumn 2014

Pat Metheny Unity Group

A slot reserved for a Unity Group photo from the autumn of 2014. Its date is still to be confirmed.

Photo coming from Sean’s archive

  • The original photo you listed for October 20, 2014 (Unity Group / Warfield marquee), at full resolution with its date intact

Editor’s note (staging only): Date check: the brief lists October 20, 2014 for a Unity Group / Warfield marquee photo. The Warfield marquee already on the site reads FEB 28 (the February 28, 2014 show), and Pat’s official news lists the Unity Group in Korea, Japan and Australia from October 5 to 27, 2014. Please confirm the date from the photo’s metadata. If it is the February marquee, this slot merges into the Warfield entry.
