Beneath Missouri Skies: Pat Metheny in Kansas City, 1964–1972

Every Metheny fan knows that Pat came out of Missouri. Carolyn Glenn Brewer’s book is the only full-length account of what actually happened there. It follows the Kansas City years from 1964 to 1972: the teenage gigs, the local scene, and the path that led him to Miami and then Boston, where the professional story begins.

The book fills a gap the records only hint at. Missouri runs right through the music. There’s “Missouri Uncompromised” on Bright Size Life, and decades later the duo record with Charlie Haden, Beyond the Missouri Sky. The sound people describe as “Midwestern” in Pat’s writing, open and melodic and unhurried, had a place and a scene behind it, and this book documents them.

It’s volume 14 in the University of North Texas Press series North Texas Lives of Musicians, a university-press biography rather than a collection of anecdotes, and you don’t need to read music to follow it. It fits fans who care about origins: how a teenager in the Kansas City area became the musician who, a few years later, made Bright Size Life.

It works well alongside Mervyn Cooke’s study of the ECM years, which picks up roughly where Brewer leaves off. Read them in order and you get the story from the first local gigs to First Circle.
